3 Types of Injection Moulding Machines Used in Australia
Injection moulding or injection molding is commonly used in the manufacturing industry because of its utility and versatility in producing materials made of metal, glass, elastomer, confection, thermoplastic, and thermosetting polymer. Today’s manufacturing industry has been greatly depending on this manufacturing process as it is cost-efficient and produces good results in faster turnaround time.
Background and Overview
Injection molding, according to “Manufacturing Processes Reference Guide” authored by Robert H. Todd, Dell K. Allen, and Leo Alting, and published by Industrial Press, Inc., is a process used to shape thermoplastic materials. “Injection molding is a shaping process in which thermoplastic material is fed into a heated barrel, mixed, and forced into a mold cavity where it cools and hardens to the configuration of the mold cavity. It is used to produce thermoplastic products than any other process. In some circumstances, thermoset plastics can also be used in injection molding.”
The book likewise identified the process characteristics of injection moulding, which include:
- Utilizes a ram or screw-type plunger to force molten plastic material into a mold cavit
- Produces a solid or open-ended shape conforming to the mold cavity
- Uses thermoplastic or thermoset materials
- Produces parting line and sprue and gate marks
- Ejector pin marks are usually present
Injection Molding Machines
Since the end of World War II, the production of plastic materials and products with the help of injection molding has flourished. Because the production of plastics became cheaper and faster, the demand likewise increased, which prompted plastic production revolution. Incidentally, companies have invested on the production of injection molding machines. Thus, today, industrial companies have sophisticated and reliable injection molding machines.
Most of today’s injection molding machines is horizontally oriented because they fasten the molds much faster than the vertically oriented ones. However, the vertically oriented machines are used in specific uses like insert molding, which allows the machine to take advantage of gravity’s force. Regardless, these orientations of machines provide specific benefits and uses to the manufacturing industry.
There are at least three types of injection molding machines, which are:
Electric machine – Also known as Electric Machine Technology (EMT) is an electric press, which is beneficial in operations that do not require high costing and expenses. Known for cutting energy consumption and addressing different degrees of environmental concerns, EMTs are best for companies that limit carbon footprint. Also, EMTs produce lesser noise, are faster, and have higher accuracy. However, the downside for EMTs is that they cost much higher compared to other types of injection moulding machines.
Mechanical machine – This type of injection molding machine uses toggle system to build up tonnage on the clamp side of the machine. Tonnage, basically, is required on all machines in order for the clamp side of the machine not to open as a result of injection pressure. This is particularly beneficial because even if the tool half opens, it will still create flash in the plastic product mounted. When tonnage built each cycle is the same as that of hydraulic machines, mechanical machine’s reliability and durability is achieved further.
Hydraulic machine – The most common type of injection molding machine is the hydraulic type. During the early years of injection molding, hydraulic machines are the ones first used. Presently, hydraulic machines are still widely used around the world except in Japan where all-electric machines are commonly used. Although hydraulic machines are relatively not very precise and accurate, their utility and durability are unquestionable.
In Australia, there are different companies that provide injection moulding services and products. Companies like ASP Plastics have been known for providing quality and cutting-edge injection molding services. If your company needs injection molding services, you may consider such companies as they have years of experience in the industry.
