The Dangerous Competitions Around The World

If we compare today’s sports with ancient competitions, we realize that today’s sports are relatively safe and are governed by a set of humane rules. Not only the players are heavily padded but also spectators are kept at a far off distance. Even the combat type sports are not life threatening. However, there are some incredibly dangerous sports all over the world that are threatening but still participants love playing them and spectators love watching them.

1.The World BASE Race

You must be aware of wingsuit jumping/ flying in which a person wears a special type of suit and jumps from the height; allowing user to fly. Paul Fortun created a dangerous game out of this sports. The competition is organized twice a year since 2008. Participants of this game jump from a height of 4265 feet (1,300 meters) and the first one to reach ground is the winner. Furthermore, the winner is rewarded with the title of ‘World’s Fastest Flying Human Being’.

2.The Angola Prison Rodeo

Louisiana State prison, also known as Angola has the capacity to keep 5,000 prisoners. In 1964, the management organized an event in which prisoners could show their skills such as riding, broncos and roping calves. The major event is the one in which four prisoners sit around a table and an infuriated bull attacks them. The last man remaining is considered the winner. Other events include Guts & Glory, bull riding and Wild Cow Milking.

3.The Basant Kite Flying Festival

The basant festival is the world’s largest kite flying festival in the subcontinent. The goal behind this competition is to cut the twines of other kites. However, many people use chemical powdered twines and wires to fly kites. This use of chemicals and wires often causes casualties. Many people fall from roofs.

4.The Valparaiso Cerro Abajo Bike Race

This dangerous bike race, which started in 2003, is held every year in the streets of Valparaiso, Chile. The participants’ ride their bikes in steep declining streets at high speed. Riders face many difficulties such as sharp turns, jumping from 15 feet, riding on stairs etc.

5.The Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling Competition

Cooper’s Hill is located in Gloucester, England where a yearly contest of cheese rolling is organized. A huge roll of cheese is thrown downwards from a hill top and the contestants have to chase it before the end line. Although it is not possible to catch that roll as it rolls down at around 70mph but people run and nearly all of them fall and get hurt.

6.The World Sauna Championships

World sauna championship started in 1999. It takes place in Heinola, Finland. The contestants of this competition sit in a room with starting temperature of 110o C (230o F). Staying at such a high temperature not only causes dehydration but third degree burns and death. Vladimir Ladyzhensky; a contestant died in the final round during 2010 after which the competition was shut down.

7. Freestyle Alligator Wrestling Competition

James Holt took the responsibility of organizing freestyle alligator wrestling officially for 2010. Participants jump into the water where a wild alligator is waiting to receive them. Participants have to fight head-to-head with the alligator for ten minutes and have to take it out of the pool. If some extra stunts are performed (with alligator), bonus points are also given.

8. The Green River Narrows Kayak Race

Green River Narrows is located near Asheville, NC where the dangerous game of Kayaking takes place. The competition is dangerous enough to kill even experienced kayakers so it is not an official event. Kayakers often get badly hurt by waterfalls as high as 18 feet. Moreover, there is no standby medical assistance.

The 7 Most Dangerous Cities

Nothing like the buzz of a big city, but they can also be dangerous place. Crime, natural disasters, and traffic make some of the world’s major population centers a source of deathly excitement. Here are some of the places where you may end up meeting your maker.

Miami, Florida

As the setting for famous TV shows like “Miami Vice” and “CSI: Miami”, this tropical city already has a reputation for danger. One of the main points of entry for narcotics into the United States, Miami has notoriously high rates of gun violence and gang warfare. That’s not the only thing that makes the city dangerous, though: Miami is also an infamous hurricane magnet.

Medellín, Colombia

This is where a large share of the drugs entering the aforementioned Miami actually come from, and the old stomping grounds of the infamous Pablo Escobar, who led the city’s eponymous Medellín Cartel. Escobar was shot to death by the Federales in 1993 and Medellín no longer claims the title of “most violent city in the world”, but ultra-violent cartels are hardly a thing of the past. Turf wars still break out on a semi-regular basis, and political violence from armed groups such as FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) is still a serious issue.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Famous for the freewheeling culture associated with the Mardis Gras festival and the iconic Bourbon Street, New Orleans is also home to some of America’s most notorious street gangs. Homicide rates are extremely high, but as with Miami they’re not the only thing making this a risky place to live, as the tragedies surrounding Hurricane Katrina showed.

San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Currently recognized as the “Murder Capital of the World”, this city’s constant roiling conflict between rival drug gangs make it one of the most dangerous human-inhabited places on Earth outside of a war zone. Honduran authorities have responded with “Operation Lightning”, inundating especially violent neighborhoods with soldiers and elite police, but it’s unclear how much effect this has had on the stratospheric murder rate.

Mosul, Iraq

A flashpoint of conflict during the Anglo-American-led invasion of Iraq, Mosul continues to be a frequent target of suicide bombers and car bombs. Large numbers of refugees from ethnic and religious minorities such as the Assyrian Christians and the Kurds have fled the city following waves of threats and murders. It has also become a base of operations for Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups.

Juárez, Mexico

More drugs, more gangs. Sitting on the Rio Grande river border between Mexico and the United States, this city is a prime drug corridor and as such a focal point for turf wars and other narcotics-related violence. It has been called the “most violent zone in the world outside of declared war zones”, although small armies of heavily-armed gang members may make that a dubious distinction.

Detroit, Michigan

The traditional center of the United States’ automotive industry, Detroit has seen a long, agonizing decline of its lifeblood industry. Widespread unemployment and poverty have led to skyrocketing rates of violent crime. It was rated the most dangerous city in the United States by Forbes magazine for the fourth year running in 2012, although this has been hotly contested by city officials, who say serious revitalization efforts are starting to bear fruit.
