10 Brilliant Actors Who Still Don’t Have Oscar

All movie critics and experts are sure that an Oscar nomination should be considered as the main and most important sign of actors’ talent. If you have Oscar, it means that you are loved not just by your fans but critics too. Moreover, Oscar gives a chance to play more serious roles, get much money for them and have an opportunity to refuse playing this or that character. In other words, Oscar can be called the highest level of every actor’s career. All actors dream of getting Oscar, don’t they?

But what does it look like to be nominated for Oscar (several times even) but still not get this prestigious award? It’s pity of course, but many charismatic and really talented actors still don’t have Oscar, though they have made a significant contribution to cinematography already.

Let’s take a look at top 10 brilliant actors who can be called the best “losers” of Hollywood: all of them had been nominated for Oscar but didn’t get it in fact. Nevertheless, we know they are really cool, don’t we?

# 10 James Caan

This handsome and talented man is mostly known for his role of Sonny Carleone in ‘The Godfather’, a crime movie directed by Francis Coppola. He had been nominated for Academy Award for Supporting Actor, but didn't get it, as well as Golden Globe where he had a nomination for Best Supporting Actor too.

This Oscar nomination of 1972 was the only one for James Caan actually. He is also known for his roles in such movies as ‘Dick Tracy’, ‘Misery’, ‘Dogville’, ‘Gardens of Stone’, and many others.

#9 Bill Murray

We all know the movies of this famous actor, as each of them became popular and loved by audience at once. Bill Murray has become a real Hollywood star after his role in a well-known comedy ‘Ghostbusters’ (1984), and the movie ‘Groundhog Day’, where he appeared as a protagonist, helped everyone understand that Mr. Murray was a really talented and charismatic actor.

But his first and only nomination for Academy Award had taken place much later, in 2003, for his role in ‘Lost in Translation’. By the way, he won Golden Globe Award for Best Actor then. This is one more proof of the fact that Oscar’s absence doesn’t make you a loser at all.

# 8 Edward Norton

This actor is known for many roles in really brilliant movies, such as ‘Fight Club’ and ‘The Illusionist’ for example. He has 2 Oscar nominations at the moment, and the first one was actually for his debut role in ‘Primal Fear’ (1996). Later, in 1998, he was nominated again for ‘American History X’ (Best Actor), but he wasn't lucky to get Oscar again.

However, Golden Globe Award has found this charismatic actor: he’s got it for his debut in ‘Primal Fear’. Today Edward Norton isn’t going to give up: he is still young (in spite of the fact he is 43 already), fans love him, and we still can see him in many interesting and really exciting movies.

# 7 Gary Oldman

All critics call Garry Oldman the best British actor of modern age, though he has only one Oscar nomination at the moment. Academy Awards nominated him for Best Actor in ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ (2012). This brilliant actor is known as a master of disguise for his ability to play characters as no one else.

Gary Oldman is well-known for many movies, and all of them were positively accepted by critics. Everyone calls his an actor who is worth several Oscars at least, but it seems that Academy Awards has a different point of view here. Mr. Oldman is known for his roles in ‘Lost in Space’, ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Interstate 60′, and others.

# 6 Steve Martin

We all know this outstanding comedian actor and producer. The actors of his type are always loved by audience, but critics don’t accept them serious. Today Steve Martin is one of the most famous Hollywood comedians and the holder of many Grammy awards (yes, Mr. Martin is a musician as well).

Steve was so close to getting Oscar twice – in 1984 for his role in ‘All of Me’ (he was also nominated for Golden Globe Award here), and in 1987 for ‘Roxanne’ – but he wasn’t lucky to enter the short lists of nominees then. However, all fans had a chance to see Steve Martin as an Oscar host three times.

# 5 Steve Buscemi

This well-known actor can be deservedly called a Hollywood veteran already. He has 88 roles behind, including such blockbusters as ‘Armageddon’ and ‘Con Air’, as well as Quentin Tarantino’s cult film ‘Reservoir Dogs’, and a black comedy ‘Fargo’.

Steve Buscemi has been nominated for different awards, including Golden Globe, many times, but he doesn’t have any Academy Awards nominations at the moment, though his movies won Oscars many times.

# 4 Brad Pitt

Well, only the blind and the deaf didn't hear anything about this handsome and talented actor. Brad Pitt is known for his roles in many movies, some of them are even impossible to imagine without his face. We all remember his Tyler Durden from ‘Fight Club’ who has been called one of 10 most awesome movies characters of all times. ‘Meet Joe Black’, ‘Seven’, ‘Inglourious Basterds’, ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ – when we hear all these titles, Brad Pitt comes to our minds at once.

Brad has 4 Oscar nominations at the moment. His first nomination was in 1996, and it was Academy Award for Supporting Actor in ‘Twelve Monkeys’. Then came ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ (Best Actor in a Leading Role) and ‘Moneyball’ (Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Motion Picture). By the way, ‘Moneyball’ (2012) is called the best work in Pitt’s career at the moment.

# 3 Johnny Depp

A legendary Captain Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, and Mad Hatter. Together with Gary Oldman, Johnny Depp can be called a real master of disguise: very often he is impossible to recognize while playing this or that role. Millions of fans all over the world, dozens of awards, including Golden Globe, MTV, and People’s Choice Awards to “Best Actor of the Decade” (2011) – what can be a better proof of this charismatic and talented man’s talent?

Johnny Depp had a chance to get Oscar three times, though, as we know, he wasn't lucky enough to do that. He nominated for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ (2003), ‘Finding Neverland’ (2004), and ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’.

# 2 Tom Cruise

As well as Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise has 3 Oscar nominations at the moment: 2 nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role (for ‘Born on the Fourth of July’ and ‘Jerry Maguire’) and 1 nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (‘Magnolia’).

In spite of the fact he doesn't have any Oscars yet, Tom Cruise can be hardly call a loser: four parts of ‘Mission Impossible’ have made him one of the richest people in Hollywood. He is not just an actor now, but a director and producer as well.

# 1 Leonardo DiCaprio

Both movie critics and fans were very disappointed this year when Leo DiCaprio had not been even nominated for Oscar for his role in ‘Django Unchained’. Well, Academy Awards’ choice is never possible to predict, but it doesn't mean that Leonardo doesn't deserve being in the list of Oscar winners at all. He has 3 Oscar nominations today: 1 nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’, 1994) and 2 nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role (‘The Aviator’, 2004 and ‘Blood Diamond’, 2007).

Today he has such awards as MTV, Golden Globe and Silver Berlin Bear. We hope that Leonardo DiCaprio will finally get his Oscar as he really deserves it: his brilliant performance in ‘Inception’, ‘Shatter Island’, ‘Gangs of New York’, and many other interesting and really qualitative movies is worth watching again and again.

If you think that some really talented Hollywood actors were missed in our list, you are welcome to share your opinion in comments. Certainly, it’s impossible to name all of them here. We love them for their talent and charisma, and we will always appreciate their work as they make us love cinematography more and more.
