Top 10 Awesome Film Music Composers
Since the first flickering images emerged from a cranky projector in the 1890s, music has always been an integral accompaniment to the moving image. In the early days it was a pianist/organist or a record spinning merrily around a phonograph – but now we have the movie composer.
Usually brought in at the last minute, it’s incredible they’ve had the time to write anything at all. But the past few decades have shown time and time again that the crème de la crème of the film composing fraternity can more than rise to the challenge. Sometimes their music is even more memorable than the movie itself.
Here are ten of my favourite film music maestros.
Bernard Herrmann
Known primarily for his association with Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho, North by Northwest), Herrmann’s magnificent film music career began with Citizen Kane and finished with Taxi Driver. A notoriously belligerent and cantankerous man, his volatile personality nevertheless informed classic scores for romance (Ghost and Mrs Muir), sci-fi (Day The Earth Stood Still), fantasy (Jason and the Argonauts), and horror (It’s Alive). Often imitated, but never bettered.
Danny Elfman
Former frontman of rock band OingoBoingo and Tim Burton’s go-to composer, Elfman is the premier tunesmith of choice for summer blockbusters (Batman, DickTracy, Hulk, Spiderman). He’s also an adroit tunesmith of smaller-scale movies (Dolores Claiborne, Good Will Hunting). All that andwrote the theme from TheSimpsons.
John Williams
The most well-known, popular and revered composer of modern times, Williams has scored all but one of Steven Spielberg’s films and has composed classic score after classic score. Jaws, Star Wars, ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter. His incredible corpus of work speaks for itself. And even in his early 80s, he’s not slowing down – he’s signed on to score the new Star Wars movie.
Jerry Goldsmith
There’s definitely been a gapingfilm music void since the tragic passing of once pony-tailed maestro Goldsmith in 2004. He brought mastery and craftsmanship to everything he wrote, from Planet of the Apes to Alien, Papillon to Total Recall,Star Trek to Gremlins. Like a true artist, he embraced all genres and styles, and was one of the pioneers of interpolating synthesisers with symphony orchestra.
Alex North
From the same era as Herrmann, North was one of the first film composers to incorporate jazz into the movie music milieu, such as in his pioneering work forA Streetcar Named Desire and The Misfits. He was more than capable of earth-shatteringly epic sounds though, with his unforgettable music for Spartacus, Viva Zapata and Cleopatra. He was also a close friend of the aforementioned Goldsmith, fact fans.
Elliot Goldenthal
One of the new breed of film scorers, Goldenthal’s music is an eclectic and often eccentric confluence of musical nuances. His sound world is distinctly individual, with the old-school Herrmann being the closest approximation in terms of a unique and bold – often uncompromising – style. Interview With A The Vampire, Batman Forever, Public Enemies. Dark, diverse, distinctive, and often devilishly dangerous.
Howard Shore
Shore is now the definitive and unmistakable sound of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings/Hobbit films. But he’s also crafted superior work for Canadian horror director David Cronenberg (his awesomely operatic The Fly, Dead Ringers), Silence of the Lambs, as well as the occasional comedy (Big, Mrs Doubtfire).
Nino Rota
The circus sound to Federico Fellini’s deliriously freakish filmic carnivals, his sound encapsulates the free-spirited, off-kilter world of eccentric European movie making. He wrote 150 film scores, ten operas and five ballets as well. Amarcord, La Dolce Vita and The Godfather are among his most famous scores.
John Barry
The sound of 007, Barry provided the James Bond series his inimitable aural landscape, from Dr No to The Living Daylights. His use of lush strings and horns became his signature sound, receiving accolades and awards for his work (and unforgettable themes) on Born Free, Midnight Cowboy, Out of Africa, Dances with Wolves and Chaplin.
James Horner
Horner’s always been one to divide the critics, with the frequent accusation being he’s the most prolific self-plagiarist on the planet. But that’s nothing new and something of a redundant argument when you consider the self-borrowing of other composers through the decades. I defend him though, because all his scores have a class, integrity, passion and gravitas to them – just listen to Braveheart, Aliens and Apollo 13.
Awesome Underground Bicycle Storage System In Tokyo
Tokyo is such a crowded place that even finding a place to park your bicycle can be a daunting task. But leave it to the Japanese to find a genius solution to this growing space problem. The ECO-Cycle Park is an automated bicycle storage system buried 11 meters under the city streets that can hold up to 200 bikes.
Although Japan is one of the world’s leading car manufacturers and its public transportation system is probably the most advanced on the planet, the bicycle is still a very popular means of getting around in the busy traffic. Unfortunately parking spaces are at a premium, and owners are often forced to leave them on the sidewalk where they become obstacles for pedestrians.
To solve this problem, Japanese company Giken Seisakusho, which specializes in tidal and flood protection systems, created ECO-Cycle, a series of five underground storage bicycle storage facilities where owners can safely “park” their bikes in just 8 seconds. The buried cylindrical structures are only seven meters wide, but deep enough to safely store up to 200 two-wheel vehicles each.

Bicycle riders have to pay a monthly subscription to gain access to ECO-Cycle, and they are issued a personal card. Whenever they want to park their bikes, all they have to do is position them in front of one of the above-ground booths and swipe their card through a reader. A mechanical arm clamps it in place, the booth door opens and the bike disappears underground. The whole process takes just 8 seconds, and retrieving the vehicle is just as fast. Ever since the solution was implemented in Konan Hoshi No Koen Park, in 2010, illegally parked bicycles have mostly disappeared from the area.
“Steel boards are inserted into the ground to create a cylindrical shape, and the soil inside is then removed. We can do this in only two months,” Shotaro Yano, head of the Giken’s underground development division, says about the advantages of ECO-Cycle. “As soil pressure is evenly distributed (thanks to the cylindrical shape), the parking facility is reasonably earthquake resistant. As a carrier device is placed in the center, the distance the bikes have to be moved is minimized.” The construction of an underground bicycle storage unit costs 150 million yen ($1,5 million). Including those under construction, there are currently 43 ECO-Cycle facilities at 16 locations across Japan.

Awesome and Futuristic 3D Printers
Incredible Devices Build Prototypes from Scratch
Forget about holographic imagery; 3D printing devices can create prototypes from scratch, and the amazing technology has become more affordable in recent years so anyone could own one and build or copy objects one layer at a time.
The process is also called additive manufacturing, and it differs from traditional factory processes that employ subtractive techniques such as turning, cutting, and drilling. Computers provide detailed plans, and any three-dimensional object is built one layer at a time using a variety of materials. This extraordinary technology makes an ideal method for preparing expensive prototypes such as jewelry designs, dental appliances, educational aids, medical devices, precision automotive parts, and aerospace industry components.
The Technology is Real
This futuristic technology is not a pipe dream, but exists with current 3D printers. The process can produce tools, shoes, prototypes of products, and educational aids. Of course, there are different levels for commercial, industrial or home use. Most home models produce items from plastic, but 3D printers use metal, resins, plaster, and polymers. The process begins with specific blueprints or instructions, and the machine starts building at the bottom, and then it works its way up. The items the machines produce are at present rather small, and they usually must fit within an eight-inch cube.
Top Five 3D Printers
Five of the top 3D printers currently available include the following models.
1. The Alaris30 3D Printer
This advanced model sells for around $25,000, making it cheaper than some cars, and the machine offers the capability of creating detailed prototypes that users can create fairly easily. The desktop machine creates high-quality parts with great detail and finishes that match design specifications precisely.
Another important advantage of the system is the ease of operation. User-friendly operation makes this model an excellent choice for offices and businesses that need to create detailed prototypes quickly and efficiently. The cost of having prototypes made by outside vendors makes this 3D printer an economical choice for many businesses. The printer produces the finest work for the price currently available, but prices continue to drop.
2. ProJet SD 3000 Professional 3D Printer
This printer produces vibrant plastic prototypes and component parts to exacting specifications suitable for engineering and mechanical tolerances, and the machine accomplishes each printing job up to 40 percent faster than other printers on the market. The machine comes in a sophisticated design that enhances the workplace or office dÈcor, making it a great choice for businesses that want to impress their clients with the technology.
The machine has advanced job software that makes operation very intuitive, so users need not spend a lot of time calibrating or troubleshooting printer problems. Other distinct advantages of the system include the following benefits.
Small parts can be designed holistically, or operators can fabricate parts that snap together to create larger prototypes.
The web interface allows people throughout the company to interact with the process, a great selling point to generate client astonishment when they see their ideas come to life.
Fabricators can currently choose from six vibrant colors: red, ivory, black, gray, blue and the proprietary shade Zoom.
3. Solido SD300 Pro 3D Printer
This printer makes an amazingly affordable choice for office prototypes. Priced under $10,000, consumers might even consider this model for home inventions or hobbyist creations.
The price of operating a 3D printer depends not only on the machine, but also on the materials needed for fabrication. The SD300 uses economical consumables for its processes, and no special curing materials are necessary, reducing operating costs. Special personnel are not needed to operate the equipment, so companies can bring new products to market more quickly at reduced developmental costs.
4. The ProJet 1500
This printer is a smaller, more affordable version of the ProJet 3000, retailing for only $14,500. The printer offers a unique design, multiple colors, and many of advantages and features of the larger version.
5. V-Flash Modeler
This amazing machine brings affordability to the 3D printing process, and the price is easily affordable for home use. Hobbyists and inventors can easily fabricate anything they could imagine with this easy-to-use 3D modeling fabricator. The V-Flash maintains its speed when producing multiple models, so designers can build complex interlocking prototypes quickly.
The V-Flash was the first 3D printer priced under $10,000, about the price of a high-quality bed. Installation is extremely easy, and owners can learn to operate the machine quickly at home or in small offices, giving them the capability of competing with larger design firms.
The incredible efficiency of the 3D printing process allows anyone to create any product if the right instructions are provided. The printers add one layer at a time until the targeted item is produced in solid form, composed of the specified materials. Eventually, these printers will exist in every home, and they will produce items in much the same manner as the replicators seen on futuristic Star Trek episodes.
